Fede Delfino is the bass player for Sebastian Bach.
According to Sebastian Bach, he’s the only guy Sebastian Bach has ever been in a band with who can sing Sebastian Bach :p
He’s also half Italian, half Basque from Uruguay, and someone who escaped vocal cord surgery by changing his entire diet.
Behind the backup vocals, Fede deals with torn meniscus on both knees, discovered hot yoga out of necessity, and swears by intermittent fasting.
In this Gym Rock Crew Interview, Fede breaks down his relationship with lifting weights, how a certain condition almost ended his singing career, the diet that shrunk his vocal cord cyst, and his favorite form of cardio.
Hot yoga became the secret
Fede doesn’t go to traditional gyms.
The only indoor exercise he does is hot yoga – like Pilates in a hot studio.
He talks about how a friend who plays tennis told him to strengthen the muscles around his torn meniscus instead of getting surgery, why that advice led him to yoga, and how holding those positions gave him full mobility without going under the knife.
Now the whole Sebastian Bach band does it.
It’s become their secret – feeling good, staying loose, and not getting stiff like heavy lifting does.
He also shares his number one physical activity when he’s home.
The vocal cord cyst that changed everything
Fede was doing tons of cover gigs at local bars.
Yelling. Drinking. Eating whatever. Dealing with acid reflux.
One day he couldn’t sing. The ENT put a camera in and found a cyst on his vocal cord.
They sent him to vocal therapy, but he knew if he didn’t take it seriously, it was over.
He talks about discovering a certain diet and how the cyst just shrunk on the scans.
It’s not completely gone and his voice doesn’t feel like before, but he found different ways to sing notes and work around it.
No surgery needed. Just diet changes and vocal therapy.
Intermittent fasting on tour
Fede doesn’t eat breakfast.
His workout is around noon, so he trains on an empty stomach, eats right after, and feels great.
He talks about how this eating pattern reduces cravings on tour, why he doesn’t need to buy chips at gas stations anymore, and how fasting helps him stay in control when everything else is random.
On tour he looks for local diners – family owned places that can make steak and eggs or something simple.
In this interview he talks about how he balances this on tour without going way off plan.
Walking European cities
Fede’s favorite form of cardio is walking, especially in European cities.
He grew up in Montevideo where everyone walks everywhere, so distances in America feel massive and unnatural.
He talks about making his band take a detour because he couldn’t waste five days off, and why exploring on foot connects him to nature.
Plus his take on why you don’t gain weight eating pizza and gelato in Italy.
Red meat and Uruguay
Fede eats a lot of red meat.
He’s from Uruguay where there are more cows than people.
He tried veganism once for ethical reasons but didn’t feel good or satiated.
Now he takes steps to buy meat as humane as possible, and trusts that his body requires animal protein for what he does.
He goes into detail of what he eats daily including his favorite cheat!
This was a heartwarming, and surprising conversation with Fede.
We talk about trading backup vocals with Sebastian on stage, wine and dehydration, playing in high altitude cities without oxygen and how he switched his approach to food.
Fede talks about the vocal scare that forced him to change, why he doesn’t lift anymore, and why tour is about adapting.
